I am still exploring the richness of the work of 8th century Chinese poet Li T'ai-Po. His poem "River Chant" seemed to fit perfectly with a motif from an engraving of 1858, and learning to paint a black-and-white engraving was rewarding. Since working through the typography poster tutorial in Issue #83, I've been hooked. This poster combines Dover clipart with freeware fonts to create a "Who's Who" of famous (or infamous) movers and shakers in history. Old botanical plates are wonderful sources of public domain clip art. This peony seemed a perfect fit with Li Po's poem. Inspired by the definitely lion-like entry March made in my part of the world ... I've been reading about 19th century advertising art, and that (combined with my husband's interest in steampunk) inspired this advertisement for a lecture by an airship adventurer. My love affair with typography continues ... this work combines a poem from the 8th century Chinese poet, Li T'ai-Po, with Dover clipart, a 1756 illustration of a moth (repainted), and a made-from-scratch paper texture. A new poet (Li Hai-Ku) combined with an engraving from 1843 and some Dover ornaments. Home with a cold today, so I spent an hour or so working on this gift for a friend. Going to have it printed on art paper for her to frame and hang in her new flat. ;-) When I came across this poem by the Persian poet Jalal ad-Din Rumi, I sat and stared at it for a long time. To make this type poster, I followed the tutorial in Issue #83, and used stock from the "Reader's Challenge" folder on the disk. This project was a lot of fun! I've been waiting weeks for the tournament to finish so I could do this broadside!! Way to go, Wales! Another typography experiment ... this time with a Chinese proverb. Yep, I've really got the typo bug. I'm having a blast making posters. This one was inspired by my husband, who works as a consultant to public libraries.
